Parental Information / Frequently Asked Questions

Here, you will find some answers to the common questions we get asked by the parents of prospective cadets.

What training activities are involved?
Activities are organised through our Squadron training program as part of a National Program. Squadron training occurs on Friday night's as a 'parade', and on some weekends. State training camps and courses are mostly for five to eight days. Official approval is given to programs six months in advance, so that Cadets can plan their commitments. During weekend training, leave is given on request to Cadets who may have work or study commitments or for other special reasons. Progressive training records are kept so Cadets can keep them as a personal record or career portfolio.

Will I be required to give permission for my son/daughter to attend training camps or courses?
Generally Cadets are given an information sheet with details of the training camp or activity. Parents/guardians are required to sign a permission slip authorising their attendance. Any existing medical conditions and any medication which may need supervision should be noted.

Who has responsibility for my son or daughter while attending authorised Cadet activities?
Cadet staff are available to support Cadets. Each staff member is committed to ensuring that recognised community standards are maintained and the capability of the Cadet is considered.

That said, Cadets are also responsible for carrying out instructions for their own safety. They should refrain from improper behaviour and be aware of the expectations of their parents or guardians. Cadets must respect the property of others and the equipment used.

What uniform will my son or daughter wear?
On acceptance into 417(City of Bayside) Squadron, a Cadet will be issued with their Australian Air Force Cadet (AAFC) uniform. Cadets will be shown how to look after their uniform and wear it with pride. On leaving the AAFC, the uniform is to be returned, in the same condition it was issued, aside from acceptable wear and tear.

What does my son or daughter need to do to join?
To be eligible for entry as a Cadet, your son or daughter must:

Joining

We have two recruit intakes each year; one at the start of the year and one at mid-year. We run recruiting information sessions for prospective cadets and parents which give you an opportunity to discuss any aspects of membership and highlight what the AAFC can offer your child. It will also provide your son or daughter with the chance to ask any questions that he or she may have about the activities offered and commitment required in being a Cadet.

What does it cost?
The Royal Australian Air Force provides assistance to the Australian Air Force Cadets including uniforms for cadets and travel to and from camps. Our Squadron has its own fee structure which is typically $200 per year - this takes into account all activities run by the SQN; including accomodation and messing, weekend training, and other State level (Wing) activities. This year the Squadron fees are $160.

Commitment
Your son or daughter is expected to show commitment by attending activities for at least 12 months. Personal satisfaction is best achieved if Cadets show a keen interest in progressing through programs. Your son or daughter could talk to the Cadets who have already joined up. By doing that they will find that Cadets get great satisfaction from entering the variety of activities provided.
